Old ladies fuckin' rule most of the time.
I mean:
When Michael Jackson struts around in the UAE in a burka and can't tell his ass from his face Madonna is out there in her leotard gyrating to Like a Virgin. Respect.
One of the original feisty ones must be Nina Simone though. If you disregard from such awfulness as her cover of the Bee Gees' 'To Love Somebody' and focus on her temper and her heartbreaking interpretation of Brel's
'Ne Me Quitte Pas'.
Nina performed at Ronnie Scott's in the mid 80's when her song
'My Baby Just Cares For Me was used in an ad for Chanel.
Marc Almond of Soft Cell was in the audience. He says:
"She was fantastically bitter - this time at her management's attitude to her back catalogue. On this particular night she stormed on stage with her coat on, put her plastic carrier bag on the floor and said 'I suppose you want me to play that damned song from the ad. Well I'm not going to play it.' And with that, she turned her back on the audience, sat at the piano and played all this amazing uncommercial stuff. She kept her coat on the whole time, then halfway through, picked up her shopping and announced 'I'm now going to find a gun and shoot my fucking manager' and stormed off. Apparently she had serious intentions to do just that. That's what you call live entertainment."
Finally someone who's not afraid of conflicts. Haha.
See Ms Simone perform 'If You Knew' at Ronnie Scott's in London and let time stand still for 2 minutes. Please disregard that she loses it after a while:
